This is a cunningly reworked version of Sleeping Beauty, both thought-provoking and charming. Aurora, the daughter of the Count and Countess of Bois-Joli, and Clementine, the daughter of coachman Melchior and his wife Finette, are born on the same day and christened on the same day. The good fairiies come to the christening—but the dangerous fairy, Fate herself, has not been invited.. To save the girls from the fate prophesised for them, the good fairies undertake to educate them: in the old, magical way, away from the new world of science and materialism. But Fate proves to strong for them.. Set in the 18th and 19th centuries, this is a story that will linger long in the memory. It is aimed at adolescent readers, but adults will also find much to ponder on.. Clementine is a companion to the other two fairytale novels, CARABAS and COLD IRON.
